Equanimity
/ ˌɛk.wəˈnɪm.ɪ.ti /  ·  noun

Definition
"Mental calmness and composure, especially in difficult situations."
This is the state we cultivate in every student — not just the ability to solve a problem, but the calm to face one without fear. Maths anxiety is real. We dismantle it, session by session.

Why Equanimity Maths

Tuition built differently

Most Maths tuition teaches students to perform. We teach them to understand — and that changes everything when the pressure is on.

01
Understanding before technique
We never teach a student to memorise a method they don't understand. Every concept is explained from first principles — so knowledge actually sticks under exam pressure.
02
Small groups, real attention
A maximum of 5 students per class means no student disappears into the background. Questions get answered, gaps get found, and every session moves forward together.
03
Calm replaces anxiety
Maths anxiety is one of the biggest barriers to performance in Irish schools. Our sessions are deliberately paced, judgment-free spaces where students rebuild their confidence naturally.
04
Irish curriculum, precisely
No generic content. Every lesson is mapped to the SEC Leaving Cert Maths and Junior Cert Maths syllabus — Higher and Ordinary Level — so class time is never wasted on material that won't appear in the exam.

What sets us apart

Not just another tuition school

There are plenty of places to cram for Maths. There's only one place that teaches your child to think through it calmly.

Concept-led, not rote-led
We explain the why behind every method. Students who understand the concept can adapt — students who memorise steps can't. That adaptability is what separates grades in the Leaving Cert.
Intimacy at scale
5 students per class is a deliberate cap, not a starter plan. It preserves the dynamic of a private lesson while building the confidence that comes from learning alongside peers in the same situation.
Progression by design
Classes are structured to build year on year. A 2nd year student who joins us grows into a 6th year student who is genuinely prepared — not just exam-drilled, but mathematically confident.

About the tutor

Tadgh Hanrahan

B.Ed. Maths & PE · DCU · Secondary School Teacher · Founder

"True understanding brings calm. Calm brings confidence. Confidence brings results. That's not just a teaching philosophy — it's the foundation every Equanimity Maths session is built on."

Growing up, Tadgh Hanrahan experienced first-hand what so many Irish students still face today — a Maths classroom that felt rigid, impersonal, and disconnected from how young people actually learn. That experience didn't put him off the subject. It lit a fire.

Tadgh went on to study at Dublin City University, graduating with a degree in Maths and Physical Education. As a Maths tutor in Ireland, he has spent over five years tutoring students across every year group and ability level — from students who are falling behind to those pushing for H1s — and has worked full-time in an Irish secondary school, giving him an insight into the classroom that very few tutors have.

He understands the pressure of large class sizes, the gaps they leave, and exactly what students need to fill them. That breadth of experience — across ages, abilities, and environments — is what makes Equanimity Maths different. Tadgh doesn't deliver a one-size-fits-all lesson. He reads the room, adapts his approach, and finds the angle that makes a concept click.

Equanimity Maths was founded on one core belief: that every student arrives with a story about whether Maths is "for them" or not — and that story can be rewritten. Through engaging, calm, and personally tailored sessions, Tadgh works to dismantle the anxiety and replace it with genuine understanding and lasting self-belief.

"Education is a pathway to liberation. My job isn't just to help students pass an exam — it's to change the way they see themselves as learners."

The deeper meaning behind Equanimity Maths

People ask me about the name a lot. Equanimity Maths. It doesn't sound like a tuition company. It sounds like something quieter, more intentional. That's exactly the point — and the story behind it goes back further than the business.

Testimonials

What parents & students say

Every review is from a real parent or student who has experienced Equanimity Maths first-hand.

"Ryan was doing his junior cert just gone, struggling with algebra and couple of things with maths, I asked Tadgh would he be able to fit Ryan in and help him. Straight away he replied and we set up a wk to wk work for Ryan. His way of explaining and patients with Ryan really helped. Ryan was very anti grinds at start and after his mocks he said mam will Tadgh be able to stay going with me as I’m really learning with the one to one and his simplified way of teaching. I was over the moon to see Ryan gain confidence with the subject and not be as nervous. The junior cert came and Ryan was confident going into the exam and I know since Xmas his tests had shown a great improvement. I would highly recommend Tadgh and his patients and way he is with students is brilliant. Thank you"

Ryan Mc

"Tadgh really helped my daughter with her JC math. She is dyslexic & he worked through topics methodically with lots of examples. She actually looked forward to these sessions as they gave her confidence in class and through the exams. She is now doing HL maths for leaving."

Justine

"Tadgh works hard to help develop an understanding of maths. He caters to the specific needs of each individual student, with encouragement and calm. He instills confidence in the student with his guidance and care."

Rachel carton.

"Tadgh was instrumental in giving my son confidence in the months leading up to his junior cert. He had a great way of explaining challenging concepts and calming pre-exam nerves."

Jennifer K

"Tadgh was an amazing tutor during the leaving cert for me, he helped me go into the exam feeling confident and ready which my results absolutely showed. Tadgh has a great approach when it comes to teaching maths!"

Amy Odonnell

"My son was going into 3rd year convinced he would fail maths in JC. He hadn't struggled with maths in primary school but after one failed maths exam he had convinced himself he was awful at maths. We had encouraged him to ask questions, but he didn't want to stand out in class and could never seem to get time with teachers outside class time. A friend recommended Tadgh and from the start my son was engaged, asked questions and his confidence grew and the results followed. He got a higher merit in the end and he now genuinely believes he can do well in HL maths for LC. Thank you Tadgh for instilling that confidence in him!"

Amanda H

"Our Son really benefited from these grinds in the run up to the Leaving Cert. When attention was needed in certain topics - there was always above and beyond done to help in these areas - one of the nicest things I found was months after our Son finished - Tadgh checked in to see how he got on in the leaving & and further more - again when the rounds for college were awarded. Thank you so much for all of your commitment amd hard work Tadgh"

Clara

"My son was struggling with Maths in lead-up to his Junior Cert. He found it hard to understand some of the topics and wasn't the type to put his hand up and ask questions in class. Tadhg was recommended to us, and from the first few sessions things started improving . He has a great way of explaining things so they actually make sense, and his calm, patient approach really helped my son build his confidence. He created an environment where he felt comfortable asking questions, which made such a difference. Thanks to Tadhg's for all his help. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Tadhg to anyone looking for a Maths tutor."

Roma T

"My daughter's math lessons helped her study. The studies proceeded very correctly and calmly. The teacher always made sure that the children had all the lesson notes. Thanks 🎉"

Una Zeile

"Tadgh gave my son one to one grinds leading up to his Junior Cert and he was really great. He understood how my son learns and approached his lessons so that the information really landed. He is very good at making students understand how to approach exam questions. I would recommend Tadgh to anyone parent who feels their child needs some additional help or even just to aid students in their approach to Maths."

Clodagh Barry

"Tadgh's calm, clear teaching style restored my son's confidence in Maths in the run up to his Junior Cert. Tadgh always made sure my son understood each topic before moving on. I'd highly recommend him."

Mary C

"I had two children do Maths grinds with Tadgh. They both found him excellent. My son was failing every Maths test coming up to the Leaving Cert including his Mock exam. Tadgh worked hard with Dean and was patient and understanding in allowing him to work through each question. Dean suffers with ADD and felt Tadgh allowed him the time to understand the work. Alex found Tadgh’s way of explaining each question gave her a much better way of retaining the information. She said he broke everything down and simplified the maths so that she could understand it. She also found Tadgh to be extremely patient and kind. As a family we would highly recommend Tadgh to anyone looking to seek help for Maths. Best wishes to himself for the future"

Tracy Malone

"He was very helpful and really helped me to understand the maths easier. He kept me relaxed about my maths exams and was very calm maths and not too intense but very helpful."

Sadhbh Flaherty

"Tadgh worked with my son coming up to his Junior cert exams. He gave him more confidence and helped him to relax and study more effectively. I have recommended him to several other parents."

Mark Bottomley

"Tadgh worked with my son in the run up to his leaving cert exams. He enjoyed the sessions, and asked for additional grinds with Tadgh. They worked on specific areas where extra work was required and gave him confidence that helped him to improve his understanding and how to show his work in the exams. Thoroughly recommended."

Mark Bottomley

"Tadgh was a fantastic support for my son ahead of his Junior Cert maths exam. The online format worked really well for us, and he explained tricky topics clearly and patiently, which helped build my son’s confidence going into the exam. We noticed a real improvement in his understanding and his attitude towards maths. Would highly recommend to any parent looking for online grinds."

Angela

"Went from 18% in mocks to an O3 in the real thing"

👍

"My son Shane had tuition classes with Tadgh before his Junior Cert. He found him very helpful, easy to understand his explanations and instructions as he teaches in a very calm way and has a lovely patient manner. We would hope to have lesson in the future for leaving cert and would recommend Tadgh to anyone seeking guidance and help."

Sally Allan

"Excellent Higher Level Maths grinds. Our 2nd year son’s results improved from 31% at Christmas to 70% in his Summer exams with just 8 sessions. More importantly, his confidence and understanding of the subject increased dramatically. The teaching is clear, supportive and highly effective. We would strongly recommend these grinds to any student aiming to improve their maths results."

ED

"Tadgh was an excellent resource for my son from 3rd year through to 6th year, classes are calm and focused with good grade improvements."

Rosita

"Tadgh is incredibly friendly and a pleasure to work with. He went out of his way to provide maths grinds for me despite himself being in college. He was very flexible with organising times for grinds and fully committed to teaching during each session. He’s very knowledgeable on each topic and he was the first person to help me fully understand the subject and how to solve problems on my own. He has an easygoing way of teaching and never makes you feel silly for asking questions. He would also guide me through questions I had for homework and he really took the time to help me with exam papers I found extra difficult. I thought it was nice how he would check up on how studying was going after sessions. Thanks to him I massively improved my grade in maths in the leaving cert. He is an amazing maths teacher and has a real passion for both what he does and for his students. 10/10!!"

Maria C

"We arranged revisions in our home which was very convinient for my son, also, being in home helped with anxiety as it was in familiar settings. Taigh has a great method and style of teaching that suits anxious students. He also leaves additional material for revision. We intend to keep using his maths grind service as a very needed help in the leaving cert year."

Karolina

Audrey Erdis

"My son had three sessions with Tadhg, of Equanimity Maths. In the three sessions, Tadhg revised the whole course with him in preparation for the Junior Cert Exam. It really helped him to organise the work of the three years. It gave him more confidence facing the exam. As his mother I was very happy with the tuition. I could see that my son felt he benefitted from it."

Uliana H

"Our son had a great experience with equanimity maths, Tadhg is professional, relates so well to teenagers and is professional and motivating. Thank you for all your help."

Tara G

"I cannot recommend Tadgh highly enough. My sons have been tutored by him for the past four years, from 2nd yr to current incoming 6th yrs. Tadgh follows the school topic timetable making sure they grasp the underlying concepts and building very strong mathematical foundations for all topics. When they first started, they often felt overwhelmed by new learning challenges e.g., algebra or trigonometry but Tadgh broke everything down into digestible, logical steps. He is very friendly, calm and approachable. More than just boosting grades, he helped alleviate test anxiety and replaced it with genuine confidence. He is incredibly consistent and patient and most importantly built a good relationship with them. If you are looking for a dedicated tutor who invests in their students' long-term success, Tadgh is the absolute best!"

Mary C

"Tadgh was a fantastic support for my son in the lead-up to his Junior Cert maths exam. The online lessons suited us perfectly, and what really stood out was how approachable he was. My son felt completely comfortable asking questions, and Tadgh always took the time to explain things clearly and patiently until he understood. He interacted really well with him, making each session engaging and helping to build both his confidence and his understanding of the subject. We saw a real improvement not only in his maths but also in his attitude towards it. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Tadgh to any parent looking for excellent online maths grinds."

Kate

"Tadgh has been doing one to one with my son for the last two years Shane’s grades have improved immensely, Shane relates very well to Tadgh and his confidence has improved Would hugely recommend Tadgh."
